Gratis Township Granted And Named
Gratis Township was granted and named by Alexander C. Lanier, clerk of the county commissioners, after a petition by Friends was submitted because it was too difficult to travel to Lanier Township to vote. Because the Friends said the township should be granted Gratis (free), the clerk gave the new township the name of Gratis.
